Intermatic ML300RTW Malibu 300-Watt Power Pack with Timer and Ground Shield Reviews

Review by R. Hinsen: 5 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting Reviews 4146M7EPYPL. SL75 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting ReviewsDecent quality steel case. Mechanical timer. I had the Hampton Bay 300 watt model….DO NOT BUY HAMPTON BAY TRANSFORMERS. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS VERY BAD AND THERE IS NOT EVEN ANY WARRANTY OR CUSTOMER SERVICE INFO IN WITH THE PRODUCT, as I found out when it broke and going to Home Depot for help was a joke. Anyway, I am happy so far with the Malibu and it seems that it has a bigger transformer than the Hampton and the overall construction is better. Just to convince you of how bad the Hampton Bay customer service is try doing a search for them online, you'll see.
Review by JP: 3 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting Reviews 4146M7EPYPL. SL75 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting ReviewsBought this Malibu 12 volt transformer to start an outdoor low voltage lighting project. It works as it has been designed. I have it mounted INSIDE my garage on a panel where I have my electrical sub-panel and all my other timer type devices centrally located. The caveats to report are: The timer on top is small and hard to read and is easily moved when messing with the the on/off tripper clips. The timer wheel is segmented into light and dark sections for night and day. The pointer to set the timer is really hard to see. The manual on/off switch is a round little pole that sits just outside the timer wheel. A little hokey. The tripper clips are plastic and really small and potentially could get dropped in and around the timer circle. You get two sets. The lid doesn't stay open when you're trying to set the timer so you have to have one hand holding the lid open the the other hand doing the setting. The unit itself mounts using two slots on the back. There was no template supplied for mounting. The electrical wire coming out of the unit for 110/120 volt hookup is hardwired and is about 24 inches long with a molded straight in plug. There is no way to attach this directly to an electrical box (outdoor or otherwise) via a sealed conduit without major surgery. The unit is capable of a photo electric hookup, but that is a separate purchase accessory. I may or may not buy another one of these although the price was certainly right. I need another 300 watt supply, but it will have to be mounted outside. I just don't particularly care for the way Malibu instructs you as to how to mount their unit. Again, it does function for me. I've had other timer units by Intuit that were a little more user friendly.

Moonrays 95534 10-Fixture Low-Voltage Plastic Lighting Kit, Black Reviews

Review by PaulB: 4 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting Reviews 410SyA5RMSL. SL75 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting ReviewsI had been looking for these for a while since you can usually only find Malibu. They are plastic but snap together in such a way that they are tight against water or insect infiltration. The cable loops up through the shaft and contacts to two sharp pins below the bulb. This is locked in place using a plastic cam pin. It's a little tricky to get the hang of installing at first and what I found that worked well was to use a screwdriver and push the cable hard on both pins until I could see it pierce through the other side, then put the cam lock in place. I love this feature where the connection is inside. Many of the replacements you find at your local home improvement store have clips that clip on the outside of the light to the cable and these tend to rust and look unsightly. Another install issue is the light sensor. It is a simple on/off light sensor and while I was testing each bulb I thought my transformer pack was broken. You can not place your finger or thumb directly on top of the sensor. You have to cup your hand over it. Don't ask me why but it works. I specifically looked for the lowest wattage transformer since I use LED bulbs in all my landscape sets. You can find them on amazon or on the web for around and they produce 7-10 watts of light (much more than in this set) for 1/3 watt each. I've had some in the front for the last 4 years without burning out. So…I'm running all 10 lights at 7 watts brightness for about 5 watts total. It's silly that the companies keep upping the wattage with 120/300 watt transformers and larger incandescent bulbs. Save electricity and money by using LED's.
Review by J. D. Jacob: 3 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting Reviews 410SyA5RMSL. SL75 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting ReviewsMoonrays 95540 Low Voltage Path Lighting Kit with Power Pack I actually bought the Moonray kit with the spot lights, but wanted to also list my review on here since they are essentially the same kits (sans spot lights). Like others have stated with these type of lights and systems, is you get what you pay for. Don't get me wrong, they are not horrid, but by no means are they a great system. The problem with Moonrays is the connection. It is made at the light bulb base where there are two pins under the base that pierce the cable. The problems are: The cable that comes with this unit is a very small gauge (18 Gauge is what is supplied despite the picture showing 16 Gauge). In order for the pins to hit the wire when the cable is pieced they have to be perfectly aligned. I learned from other reviewers and just bought some 14 Gauge wire instead, which gave me the desired thickness of copper to work with while maintaining flexibility when trying to bend the wire and push the pins into it. To keep the transformer on to check each connection I simply used a small piece of electrical tape over the sensor. I used a small nut driver to push the cable up into the light base pins while using the base of another (screwdriver) to hold the top part (where the light bulb goes) into place. Also contacts for the bulbs come very close together, are easily bent. If the bulb doesn't light after some manipulation of the bulb, pull the bulb base off, look at the wire and likely you'll see the perforations were off kilter, though with the 14 or 12 gauge wire this should not be a problem. Use your screwdriver to bend the pins in the proper direction and try again (but don't push the cable up into the housing with anything that will conduct electricity if you still have the transformer on. Having a voltmeter handy is nice, so if still the bulb doesn't lite, you can check the voltage across the bulb contacts. On a couple of mine it was hard just to get the bulb to contact properly and that's what was wrong even though the cable connection was good. Don't stake any of the lights down until all are connected and all are lit. Once you get the idea of what your doing on the first light, the rest are quite easy to install. Unplug the transformer… install light, plug in to check if it works… repeat until finished. Now all this works great for the pathway lights, the spot lights are another matter entirely. What a major pain in the butt to get installed. The major problem with the spot lights is there is no cam (the little thing that in the pathway lights, helps to keep the cable connected to the pins) for use in these. You push the pins and cable together, and attempt to set the "correct" angle for your spot lights, and place in the ground, the problem comes that if you Move the angle in which the spot light is set in the slightest without some major coordination of moving the cable along with it, the pins will come right out of the cable and your back to square one. Major flaw in setting these up. Setting up the two spot lights took longer than setting up the pathway lights. So only 3 stars for this product with the spot lights, minus one star for the crappy 18 gauge wire they sent, and I had to go out and buy 14 gauge wire. Minus another star for the shoddy spot lights. If it was just the pathway lights, I'd give it 4 stars. Otherwise, it was a fairly simple set up. I haven't had any problems with my transformer blowing yet, so do not know as to the longevity of the product. If anyone knows of a link to finding decent / equivalent LED's for these lights, please let me know. Getting into Lumens / mCd vs Watts is a whole other story.

Intermatic ML121RT Low Voltage 121-Watt Power Pack with Timer, Black Reviews

Review by Ralph D. Larsen: 4 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting Reviews 41xtJ4tNGTL. SL75 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting ReviewsThis is the 4th power pack I've had to order. It seems that the timer quits working or it gets a short inside after a 3 or 4 year period. The product is excellent, but work needs to be done on making them last longer. I realize it runs 24/7, but I have other things that run 24/7 also and they don't die in 3 or 4 years. It is not overloaded, but indeed under the rated capacity. Hope Intermatic gets this and works on improving their already good product.

Review by T. Wee: 5 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting Reviews 41Df%2B n375L. SL75 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting ReviewsI got this for 2 blown out lights of the same brand/model. Review by S. Seader: 5 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting Reviews 41Df%2B n375L. SL75 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting ReviewsI've used several of these light fixtures for about nine years, and they've proven to be reliable and a source of good garden lighting. They're easily adjustable to focus on specific plants or trees. I've found them quite good. My only concern is that the contact connections often loosen up from the main feeder wire. I've chosen to hard wire each unit when installing them.

Intermatic CL635R Malibu Low Voltage Metal Capped 20-Watt Landscape Bollard Light, Black Reviews

Review by W. B. Halper: 2 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting Reviews 31BoeNp qBL. SL75 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting ReviewsWhen I first wired my backyard, almost eight years ago, I put in a dozen of these lights. They looked good, but didn't last too long. Pro: – Look great for a while. – Easy to install – Inexpensive Here's what went wrong: – Aluminum corrodes. In some cases, the stake almost completely dissolved an inch underground. In others, the screw thread joining the top section to the post corroded and the sections couldn't be separated to replace a burned-out light. And in still others, the sections could be separated, but wouldn't firmly fasten together again. – The bottom is open for ventilation. Bugs get inside and carry dirt with them. The lamp reflectors serve nicely to push the falling dirt up against the bulb, which then promptly burns out…the lamps run very hot and it's important that the heat pass through glass instead of heating the glass. (Hence the warning not to touch the bulb when installing. The oil from your fingers interferes with the heat transmission.) – If they last, the black paint eventually turns gray and flakes off. A couple of people mentioned that they've had a hard time finding bulbs. That's surprising as they're standard MR-16 bulbs, available in all the big box stores, almost every hardware store (at least those where I looked!) and on-line at here at Amazon. (See Halogen Light Bulb, MR-16, BAB, GX5.3 Base, 12 Volts, 20 Watt, 36° Flood for one of many choices.) LED bulbs also work, but you need to be careful that you leave some regular incandescent bulbs on the lamp string…with only LED Lamps, the load is too low and the standard transformer's output voltage can rise and substantially shorten the life of the LEDs.
Review by Sid V: 4 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting Reviews 31BoeNp qBL. SL75 Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting ReviewsThis is a solid landscape light at a steal price. I have not had problems finding lamps as the other reviewer mentioned. They are readily available at the home center and will last longer if you wear gloves when installing. the oil from your hands will cause premature failure. i usually swap out the lights for LED's found on E*bay. The leds last just about forever and let you get by on a smaller transformer.
